There were lots of good new music releases out last Friday, and in the massive slew of them, I knew I would be most desperate to check out the latest offering from Greyson Chance. The singer-songwriter unleashed the album “Trophies“. An eight-song collection of tracks that explores the theme of fear in some of its many forms. Explaining the running concept of the long-player release, speaking during a live-stream chat on YouTube ahead of the “Nobody” music video premiere. Greyson said of the album, “it’s about fear of me losing everything I have in my life. My stability, my boyfriend, my house. I had an idea in my head that everything is kinda fleeting“. I definitely picked up on the sense of this when diving in on a listen through “Trophies” over the weekend.
After sharing the tracks “Holy Feeling” and “Hell Boy” as previous single releases, I was also interested to see what might be the next single to come out. (Because I was of the feeling there really should be another single release). With no hesitation, the track “Nobody” leapt out. Greyson later confirmed it as the next focus release over social media. It goes without saying, I was delighted by this announcement. And excited even more upon learning Greyson directed the music video for the release.
“Nobody” explores the kind of post-breakup feelings we go through when a relationship is dissolved. The many what if’s. Revenge dating. Dealing with the temptation to go back for one more try, or just for a little bit of company. This is Greyson Chance, ticking off a selection of heavy feelings if this were to happen and his expressing what it feels to have your world turned upside down. The track, by, contrast is melodically upbeat, with a light, danceable groove. Hats off to Greyson for stepping into the shoes of the video director. He has put together a lovely looking montage styled clip. He achieved the aesthetic by shooting the footage on a 90s VHS camcorder. The soft-focus vibe looks very cool and evocative, as it should be. I am loving the fact every bit of the video is overseen by Greyson Chance and that he’s acted purely upon his vision. I have now watched the video more than a few times and am so drooling for a bowl of strawberries. An instant craving, which has everything to do with the video. Give it a watch…
The album “Trophies” is a great listen, check it out here.
