So when Martin Kierszenbaum casually mentioned on Facebook that Nico Tortorella was releasing music this year, I immediately was like “WHAT?! I need to hear this!”
For those of you who don’t know, Nico Tortorella is a non-binary actor who has had pretty steady work for the past decade. I first became a fan of his from the riveting tv series called “The Followers” about a cult with lead actor Kevin Bacon trying to take them all down. Nico has since then gone to star in other great tv shows like “The Walking Dead: World Beyond”, “Younger” and even played one of the infamous Menendez brothers. And, might I add, I’m dying to see him in “The Mattachine Family” which has been on my radar for a few years now, but I haven’t been able to watch yet. Let’s just say I even watched “Just Tattoo Of Us” with MTV’s Snooki and RuPaul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race just because Nico was on it. Ok, I might be a fan of his you could say, but what’s not to like really?
So, let’s get to the good stuff then – here’s Nico Tortorella’s “Grapefruit” for your viewing pleasure:
My thoughts? Well, Nico’s singing voice isn’t what I was expecting. It’s nice though and has a deepness to it that contrasts the easy-breezy feel of the lyrics and music video. He’s definitely trying his hand at the Harry Styles way of making queer friendly pop music that speaks to Gen Z and to be fair – I’m all here for it.
“Grapefruit” is a fantastic first release from Nico Tortorella and I’ll be watching his music output very closely. Could Nico be the next big male pop star? Well, it might be too early to tell, but with “Grapefruit” my curiosity is definitely piqued and the sky’s the limit now for Nico…
