Nothing brings me more joy, early on a dark Wednesday morning in January, than to wake up, pop the kettle on and tune into a song premiere on the radio. What makes the occasion that much better? The track in question, “Loneliness,” is the first single from the Pet Shop Boys‘ upcoming album, “Nonetheless,” (also announced at the premiere).
The brand new album “Nonetheless,” out on Parlophone Records on the 26th of April, is the duo’s lockdown album. Surely this means The Pet Shop Boys, are one of the last few remaining acts to release songs written during the pandemic?. Although, equally this might go some way towards explaining how they chose the album’s first single, “Loneliness.” Additionally how they came up with the idea for the song. Similarly, since, noting the duo has returned to more of a cinematic electronic pop style that uses orchestral elements on “Loneliness“. Such an opulent sound was not achievable due to restrictions during the pandemic. Coupled with the fact Pet Shop Boys commitments due to touring “Dreamworld,” their greatest hits, live.
In a joint statement, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe commented about their new album “Nonetheless,” in a press release:
“We wanted this album to be a celebration of the unique and diverse emotions that make us human. From the more dance-orientated tracks to the raw poignancy of the introspective ballads, with their beautiful string arrangements, each track tells a story and contributes to the overall narrative of the album”.
Also released is a poignant music video directed by Alasdair McLellan. Using a queer perspective. The clip carefully demonstrates that even with friends and lovers around us, we can still experience loneliness. Evermore so when struggling with living authentically.

The album is now available for pre-order. This will also give access to priority tickets for a very special run of 5 PSB shows at London’s Royal Opera House, from July 23rd – 27th.
