Last week was about as good as it gets for the multihyphenate, singer and DJ Shygirl. Since not only did the 2023 Mercury Prize nominee unleash, the “Club Shy” EP. She picked up a shiny new MOBO award to display at home. Conveniently this has led to some coverage on EQ Music Blog. Although, I have considered Shygirl releases several times for feature, “Mr Useless,” the latest focus track lifted from the “Club Shy” EP, is the one which compels me to get behind the release namely because SG Lewis, whom I particularly like is on board as a collaborator.

Since I am not a huge fan of rap or hip-hop styles, it has taken me a while to warm up to Shygirl, especially since these styles were liberally featured in the recent debut album “Nymph“. However, in the latest focus track of the “Club Shy” EP, “Mr Useless,” SG Lewis brings a good hit of his electronic prowess into the 00s club setting of the track.

The crossover between club and electronic elements in “Mr Useless” permeates a mainstream flavour. This will obviously forge an appealing connection with a wider music audience, beyond the club scene and rap realm where Shygirl has been her most notable.

Unfortunately, it happens, that we come across a “Mr Useless” in life. A guy who doesn’t make the effort to invest in his relationship. This kind of behaviour can be frustrating for his partner. Shygirl’s “Mr Useless” song resonates with many who have faced a partner who is lackadaisical in the relationship.

With her recent MOBO Award win for best electronic/dance act, Shygirl’s career is on the rise, and it’s well-deserved. Congratulations to her on this accomplishment, and undoubtedly we can expect more great things from her in the future.
