In my last blog article (for “3D Feelings“), I said I anticipated Alfie Templeman would have a break-out year in 2022. Well, the 19-year-old indie-pop sensation has only gone and proved my thinking right. I noted Amazon Music highlighting the multi-talented indie-pop prodigy as one of the Artists to Watch in 2022. What better way is there to start the ball rolling on an exciting new chapter in music than announcing your debut album. Alfie spilt the tea about his upcoming album release “Mellow Moon” last night while in the Radio One studios again. Chatting with DJ Clara Amfo as his latest single, “Broken” had its first airplay. Thus, scoring yet, another Hottest Record In The World premiere. His sixth consecutive track to receive this accolade.

When “3D Feelings” came out in November, I pretty much became obsessed with the track. The new one, “Broken” follows with the same style of musically breezy, haze-pop with a splash of pop and a dash of funk.

Speaking about the new single, Templeman says:

“It’s a bit of an anthem for people my age really, all the wobbles of being a teenager and figuring yourself out. It’s about realising that analysing yourself is an important part of growing up.”

Well, I have news for Alfie. We never stop growing up, really. But I understand what is meant by the lyrics of this song. I know Alfie is a songwriter who is on-point with his lyrics. I cannot lie. The groove and the melody are the bits I am most interested in. I luxuriate in every little ounce of this dreamy excellence on this track. The pared-back beats and lush soundscape is everything obsession-worthy. The feel-good charm factor is out in force on “Broken“. Alfie’s most recent work makes it easy to fall head over heels in music love with this rising wunderkind.

Music videos are another one of his strengths. Building his quirky craft, each one is eclectic and with a unique sense of style. Similarly, the Jack Turner directed clip of Blood Films for “Broken” sees Alfie tumbling out of a vending machine. Begging the question, can Alfie get any quirkier than this? I ask myself… I feel he is the type of chap who will have a good shot at exceeding himself with whatever he plans to do next.

The album “Mellow Moon” comes out via Chess Club Records /AWAL on May 27th – Pre-order HERE
