A big electronic pop comeback happened, almost at the moment I reached my holiday destination. Manchester legends New Order unleashed “Be a Rebel.” A track which they originally intended to use while promoting a much-anticipated U.S. co-headlining tour with Pet Shop Boys which was booked in for September 2020. (Now pushed back to 2021.) Given the continued uncertainty and restrictions imposed which is, for now, the new norm in our daily lives. They have gone ahead and released the track anyways.

“In, tough times we, wanted to reach out with a new song. We can’t play live for a while, but music is still something we can all share together. We hope you enjoy it… until we meet again.” Bernard Sumner said in a statement.

The track is so unmistakably New Order, the crisp synth lines used really could not have come from anyone else. Always stylish dance beats with this band. “Be a Rebel” fairs no different. Isn’t it awesome how Bernard’s vocals remain gloriously unchanged with the passing of years? New Order’s consummate output can be relied upon. Melody is their power tool, their knack for hammering out pulsing beats has never waned. The musicality is still alive and kicking in their DNA. It is believed the track was written during their last album run with “Music Complete” but with lyrics which urge “Take A look at yourself, you may not be the same as everyone else. You’re just different, that’s OK. We all follow our own way. The message of the song is timely than ever. I’m now of the opinion if the band can graciously let this track loose among their electronic-pop disciples. It will be because they’ve been cooking up some other treats for when “The Unity” tour with the Pet Shop Boys does go ahead.

Low ticket warning: A one-off show at the 02 London on 6th November 2021 is selling out fast.
