Nikkis Wives

Toronto alternative pop newcomers Nikki’s Wives have an interesting story to tell. Beginning Infact by noting, in little less than a year since the trio led by Canadian pop prodigy Nikki Whitehead came together, they’ve an enviable profile for such an emerging band. Their resume glitters with appearances on top TV shows, Fox News and NBC, showcases at SXSW and tour support duties to funkateer CeeLo Green.

It’s not by chance that these guys are anything but impressive though, as they’ve each worked in areas of the music industry (Dylan concentrating on guitar, Nate the drums) with Nikki herself, entering into recording studios from the age of 12. From a friendship formed, it spawned a band and consequently in a quick turn-around of less than a month holed up in a recording studio they had written and recorded their debut EP.

Take from that, that the band prefer to undergo an organic process and it certainly translates into the fabric of their steely observed creative vision.

Nonetheless, despite its short-time in coming together, Debut EP “For E.V.E.R.” shows considerable strength as an accomplished body of work. It’s an intriguing launch-pad all told, carried by sleek electronic pop notes and hazily purred vocals which in-parts bring to mind the splendour of Dragonette matched by the unconventional allure upheld by Marina and the Diamonds.

There is plenty of innovative energy pulsing through this debut EP to excite the palate, going seamlessly from quirky moments to pop noir and dreamily lush, sonically mapped, melodic fair. Even going full-on darkly cloaked in electronic pop on a fabulous track called “Fight Song”, one I feel that you’d be a fool to miss. That being said, you’d be unwise to not give anything of the “For E.V.E.R.” EP a try.

On the promotional trail of it, Nikki’s Wives have plumped for the nostalgically groomed synth-pop number “Lonely Being Cool” to act as introduction to the band. As introductions go it is one of flirtatious synths, brass notes and richly dramatic tones bound together by Nikki’s sultry sprawling vocals. It’s all enough to instantly captivate and start an on-going new obsession.
