BrendanMacleanYou may not remember science class or live in an area in which earthquakes aren’t something that affects your area on the regular. As a quick refresher, a tectonic plates are sections of the earth’s crust that shift with the heating of the earth’s core. When two tectonic plates rub against each other an earthquake or volcanic eruption occurs. Now, enough for EQ Music’s science class. For the latest single from Brendan Maclean, he takes this scientific analogy applying it to the standard human relationship in his latest video for the single Tectonic.

For those familiar with Brendan’s work, there is a little twist added to this latest musical venture. He has temporarily abandoned his folk pop sound and headed towards the electronic pop.

With a twinkling synth intro and heavy bass you’re easily sucked into the pulse of Brendan’s dancing in the very simple yet visually complex video. The heavy, and abrupt movement in his dancing feels quite angry and painful, then when the song reaches the bridge where you hear the line “Tidal waves can’t pull us apart” it slows down to something a little more romantic and calmer as if the relationship described is calming after their earthquake.

Along with the dancing there is this nice drawn outline of his figure dancing adding just a little more artistic depth beyond just a static shot of Brendan’s dancing (dancing is fun, but sometimes you need that x factor) . Yet, by keeping those effects to a minimum allows the song really stands out. Though, there is a part where we see Brendan’s torso separated giving a literal depiction of what is happening inside his soul which felt placed perfectly as the emotions of the song roller coaster from pain to getting closer. This allows us to see where exactly in the song if he’s feeling down or up.

Brendan is not your stereotypical pop star. Nor does he need to be. Maybe the tectonic plates in which our radio airwaves sit on will give Tectonic a chance to cause an earthquake worldwide.
