Quite literally, “Oh My God” is the track from Canada’s Boniface which made us want to dive in with a listen of their debut album, last weekend.
Feeling that I didn’t know enough about the young artist, (Micah Visser’s, Boniface project) after being alerted to the solo artist’s latest focus single lifted from their debut long-player. I sensed that I’ve been a late-comer to the Boniface party and was keen to make up for the lost time. As soon as I heard the self-titled album had been unleashed, I couldn’t listen to it soon enough. The tantalising, dreamy 80s synths met with indie-pop stylings which are teamed with intimate, heartfelt lyrics. Help to form a collection of stories about coming of age in a small town. On this occasion, I had the inclination I would learn more about Boniface by listening to their tracks, than reading an elaborate or well-written biography.
I was right on both accounts. The album is steeped in powerful lyrics and blooming kaleidoscopic soundscapes. Is a most sincere and honest account, which makes confident strides in Micah Visser’s songcraft and artistry. A compelling listen from beginning to end that I recommend you seek out at your earliest convenience. If you know the alt-indie outfit Cub Sport (who have featured on this blog many times.) Feeling, Boniface is like a more indie-pop version of them.
Of the new single, Visser explains. “”Oh My God” is about letting someone know, how you feel emphatically but without expectation. Love can feel, big and scary and complicated, but mostly, I think it’s just about speaking your truth and letting it lie. With “Oh My God,” I’m speaking my truth, and letting it lie.”
Musically, “Oh My God” has a warm pulse and exhibits fighting energy. While, in complement, the lyrics are upfront and have a noticeably cooler, vibe. The Boniface album features lots of statement-making pop tracks but if searching among them for an anthem “Oh My God” is the one which ticks the box. Moreover, because of it’s rousing crashes of electrifying synths and addictive melody. On the visual side, the neon-filled music video definitely has my attention.
