I have spent much of the weekend trying to decide whether I like the new Shakira track “Don’t Wait Up” or not. When I heard the multiple GRAMMY® and LATIN GRAMMY® winning Columbian singer-songwriter was dropping this track last week. My head started to spin at the prospect of a new banger of the same enormity as her 2006 chart hit “Hips Don’t Lie“. I don’t think the new track matches up to this stature. Will I feel differently in a week about it? I don’t know.

Shakira has not released a track sung in English for a long time. So regardless, I was curious about “Don’t Wait Up” after the singer shared she had been writing with Emily Warren and Ian Kirkpatrick. (Both have worked with lots of chart-topping recording artists.) It (the track) bangs a little but does not slap as hard or is as explosive as I would have liked. With that said, Shakira’s voice is still in fine shape, and she looks great. After writing the track, Shakira says, “I knew it would be perfect for summer and those nights where you just want to not think about tomorrow!”

The truth is Shakira has not lost any of her allure. In the music video, she treats us to another of her energetic dance routines. At least, we see her switch up from shaking her hips on the dance floor to impressively riding the waves in Tenerife. Momma is hot, and she knows it. When watching the video, I guess we can work out how she shifted the extra pounds of lockdown indulgence. Safe to say Shakira has still got it, whatever it is/was, she has it. While I think it will take a little longer than just a couple of days for the song to grow on me. I do like the video much more.
