I know you will all remember Des’ree’s classic 90s hit “You Gotta Be” as the track pretty much-found chart success worldwide. Is it a track we see covered a lot? I can’t lay claim that it is. This is why I became interested in a new interpretation of the song from Canadian producer Conro featuring the German singer-songwriter LissA. Besides, I have also thought for a long time that “You Gotta Be” would still sound pretty good with a bouncy dance beat behind it. Conro’s house-driven effort would give me the chance to see if my thoughts about how best to, give the track a new lease of 2020 life, might turn out.

In its original Des’ree state, the track’s instrumental is stripped back to the minimum. The song’s lyrics and Des’ree’s heartfelt, vocal made it the revered power anthem it became. Those were things which have helped make the track stand the test of time. It would be a shame to lose some of that when tackling a new reimagining of it. With, rising singer-songwriter LissA at the vocal helm. It seems to me this was clearly thought about when Conro and LissA knocked heads about how to best approach an updated interpretation of the well-loved anthem.

LissA vocals exude soul with a dash of vulnerability about them, while still lending itself perfectly well to the upbeat, bass injected instrumental Conro provides. There is no power balance at all, even with each artist bringing their own kind of energy to the new mix. They complement one another in a most satisfying way. This new reimagining is the kind of dance track and beat that would have me up on the dancefloor. I feel sure when DJ’s get to spin this in the clubs again, it will be at the root of dancefloor euphoria.
