When it comes to the EDM market, it’s becoming more and more difficult to stand out when more DJs come into the already crowded field. The EDM sounds have begun to start sounding like there is a lack of originality in the field. Same beats, same collaborations; you need that special something to stand out anymore. After remixing some of the greatest artists to have graced the stage, Philadelphia based Louis Futon (AKA Tyler Minford) is showing that you don’t have to adhere to the stereotypical electronic sound to make it sound so special with his latest single ‘Wasted On You’ ft. ROZES.

‘Wasted On You’ opens up with these soulful vocals from ROZES, cue the feeling train. The track gives a nod to romantic drunkenness as she’s so infatuated that she can’t seem to clearly understand that her relationship is not currently working out. She begins to question… I’ve got this feeling you’ve got something to hide, to hide. Her soulful stylings met with the questioning couldn’t immerse the listener better into a sense of hurt and confusion.

Now, I don’t think I’ve heard any darker themes come out of the DJ lead EDM realm, EVER. In order to obtain such a sound, Louis Futon took a slower pace with the melody that comes across very R&B inspired with a gentle sound. His hip-hop influences shine though with the electronic kiss he gives like a modern day rap track. (Side note: It’s always a little refreshing for a 90s kid to hear the faint sound of record scratches here and there without having to explain what a vinyl record is). The bass is much softer than a typical electric track which allows the dark emotions of ROZES vocals to shine. Sometimes you just need to take a step back and realize that it doesn’t have to conform to standards set by those who have come before. By throwing all genre definitions out the window, Louis Futon has concocted something great.
