When I was at The Great Escape festival earlier this year, I kept overhearing people talk about Confidence Man. In fact, all these TGE festival goers were heaping praise on them. It was a little too late in the day to see what all the fuss was about, this happened on the final night of the festival and Raj and I had covered the length and breadth, of Brighton on that day. I knew when I got back home I’d be checking Confidence Man out online though. When I did find that minute to do just that, what I saw and heard sounded and looked hugely appealing to me and I’ve had to sit back here in the knowledge that Confidence Man were the ones that got away.

Confidence Man is a four piece dance-pop act from Brisbane. They topped a TripleJ Unearthed poll last year, and have gradually been creating a buzz with some of the quirkiest and outlandish live performances, around at present. It’s more word of mouth than PR that is working the hype for Confidence Man, I feel.

Is the Confidence Man sound…retro-funk? Is it bubblegum pop? Is it a bit of both? I don’t know where to place their kaleidoscope style. It’s a bit trippy like Dee-Lite were, the melodies are brain buzzingly infectious, I do know that much.

Here’s the video for the latest single “Better Sit Down Boy“. I do not have a clue what the video is trying to convey, other than suggesting that we be confident in doing own thing on the dance floor maybe. The sheer energy and tongue-in-cheek sense of fun are going to envelop you anyway. It’s too ebulliently de-groovy not too unless you’re the dude who only parties at Christmas.

Another good Confidence Man track to check out is “Boyfriend (Repeat)“.

The next time Confidence Man roll into the UK, I would like a ticket with my name on it, please!
