If there is one thing alternative pop newcomer Baby Queen knows how to do well, it is making an entrance. All the way to the release of her debut EP, (out 11th November) she has whipped up a buzz on the music scene. With potent tracks sharing societal views about modern life. Whether it be about body image, self-obsession or the dark side of the internet, she never fails to say her piece or neither jump straight to the point of a topic. “Want Me” is the last promotional single to hit us before the “Medicine” EP drops.

If you thought with all the standing on the soapbox moments Baby Queen has given us already, on tracks like “Buzz Kill,” “Pretty Girl Lie” and “Internet Religion,” that she must have run out of steam by now, think again. Her chops are in full flow again as she unleashes “Want Me” (in her own words) “the closest thing we’ll get to a Baby Queen love song anytime soon.”

Listen on Apple Music

The track plays out in complete Baby Queen fashion, with no messing about, but launching into her latest mission, like an incomparable tour de force. This song is about a childlike crush and an unrequited love. It’s also the most musically hardcore she has gone, yet. The singer and her band bring out the big guns on the track, brandishing a new age punk-pop style, with definite anti-pop tendencies. In the pop maths equation, the release makes Charli XCX’s sparky efforts feel kinda tame. While Bella (AKA Baby Queen) at times treads a similar footing at times to that of Bishop Briggs, as a similarly empowering lyricist and vocalist.

The music video is the biggest glimpse at what a Baby Queen gig might feel like. High energy, animated and brilliantly uncompromising. Baby Queen’s style is as unique and distinctive as it is universal. I can’t help but stop what I am doing whenever her tracks auto-play on my playlists.
