When I was alerted to Stockholm duo Violet Days track “O.D on You” a couple of years ago, I didn’t realise the parting comments I gave “perhaps it won’t be long before The Chainsmokers dial-up and put a call in for a collaboration”, would turn out to be more of a premonition about a future collaboration for the duo’s. Violet Days, production brains Kris produced The Chainsmokers track “Paris” which remains one of the duo’s biggest hits to date. Violet Days are becoming a big deal behind the scenes via their songwriting and production with top artists including Phoebe Ryan, Cash Cash and Shaun Frank. And are progressively making their presence felt with their, own material although, the band have yet to match the big reaction to their breakthrough release “Your Girl“. The current collaboration “Somber” with rising singer Morgxn, is a step in the right direction.
LA-based singer-songwriter Morgxn has been on the ascent since featuring on the Tiesto tracks, “Change Your World” and “Fighting For” in 2015. He has become known for his entrancing vocals, which settle along an expansive, R’n’B electronic style. Assisting Violet Days vocalist Lina on “Somber“, makes the best use of Morgxn’s emotive tones, adding intensity and amplifying the song’s, own melodic nuances with a yearning bittersweet steadfastness.
The song, while subtle and reflective is a form of dark dream pop allowing Lina’s sweet, airy vocals to transcend to the pearly gates of pop heaven with a blissful, elegant grace. Similarly, the accompanying video picks up the dreamlike state. Lit with mood inducing soft hues, the visual features a couple who have been separated by less than fortuitous circumstances. The clip features some rather nimble dancing, which not only acts as a message to the heart but, calls out to all of us to re-examine our lives.
