Do you like electronic pop which is strangely alluring. I know I do, although it is not often that I am hearing tracks such as this. London-based electro-pop duo Ooberfuse is a rare commodity in this respect. As their band name suggests, their craft is that they blend together fusion sounds. Pairing intoxicating grooves with electronic elements and soft, tender vocals. Ooberfuse has skills. They approach what they do with cool heads, and are mindful that over-production can expunge some of the precious creative energy they are particularly good at generating. Their new single “Set Me Free” whilst being beat-ridden and very good, has been created around an earworm, catchy hook. Powerfully, hypnotic and all kinds of interesting. Plus it has the coolest quirky video of the year thus far.

The duo says the track was “written about the emotions unleashed when someone tries to take away your freedom”. Ooberfuse front-woman Cherrie Anderson further adds. “If we open our hearts to those who are fighting for their freedom. We combine our strength with theirs to transform cycles of violation”.

Could a, more true statement be applicable in these times of rebuilding and healing and heaviness being lifted?

Listen on Apple Music

Although the sentiment filled lyrics are motivating, empowering and very digestible. The music video is in its own way, both striking and eye-catching. Ooberfuse instrumentalist Hal St John and vocalist Cherrie Anderson do not appear in the music video yet, nonetheless sent out an invite to all to join a most curious dance party. Where double-jointed individuals contort themselves into the freakiest shapes and arm-o-graphy becomes almost a competitor sport. I have seen nothing like this before. I quite worry for copy-cat attempts being made imitating these moves. Sending TikTok users, flocking to A&E department or the emergency room, with sore dislocated limbs. That said the clip has me transfixed and marvelling at the agility of these supple, contemporary dancers. It is the kind of video I can rewatch multitudinous times and notice something different about it with every watch. For me, the latest offering from Ooberfuse is boosted with TGIF vibes, so just enjoy the intoxicating earworm track and mesmerising music video like I do.
