Not everywhere in the world is getting ready for the winter season. It is best to keep in mind the opposite happens in Australia, that November means the country is heading into its summer. As such, I always become quite excited by Australian pop music at this time of year. Since, also this is a time that it has become customary that one of my favourite Australian bands, Cub Sport, put new music out. On the occasion of their new single “Replay,” the cubbies are branching out into dance music. More specifically, they are working a propulsive house style of a dance record.

But really, Cub Sport is fearless in trying something new musically. So it should not be surprising that the band has made the leap into dance music for their latest release. Since they have been inching in this direction on their last few tracks. Even with the change evident, Cub Sport is not abandoning its signature style of open-hearted lyricism.

Explaining “Replay” Tim Nelson says it “is about moving forward… Feelings aren’t as simple as we sometimes make out. You can long for something and not want it at the same time. You can love something but outgrow it”.

“I think it’s about shifting from longing for something to feeling free. But it also doesn’t have to be that deep,” he concludes.

For the music video, Tim Nelson (the band’s front person) self-directed and edited the clip. The concept behind the video is modelled after the movie cult classic “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind“.

There is nothing like setting the bar high, drawing influence from a critically acclaimed movie. A series of short clips linked together comprise the video. Effectively evokes the feelings of the post-break-up phase. A mind in a recall. The filtering of memories. Ultimately the loss of connection. Yet, the song’s sense of yearning is remedied by the soft and dreamy music, in the same way as a warm, comforting hug.

It would have never occurred to me 6 years ago, when I started writing about the band, that they would branch out into dance music. Yet, by the same token. Since I am listening to Cub Sport dance tracks now. I confess to finding these new songs wholly irresistible and catchy.
