It has not escaped my notice that Sergey Lazarev recently dropped a new album, titled “8,” a few weeks ago. This release contains only Russian songs, including “Ароматом,” which I reviewed earlier this year. Among the tracks on Sergey’s new album is a new version of “Мечтатели” – “Dreamers” by Dima Bilan. I hadn’t mentioned the album release before because I was hoping for a new single or video to appear. As it turns out, Sergey had other ideas in mind. He has not released a new single. Instead, he has gone beyond this with something different.
In honour of the 20th anniversary of the teen duo Smash!! (which first brought Sergey to prominence), he reunites with bandmate Vlad Topalov on the track “Новый год, – (Noviy god)” (“New Year.”) (This A new version of the song taken from Sergey’s 2017 album “V Epitsentre“). The title suggests a festive styled offering, but only in a visual sense. Vlad and Sergey celebrate the festive season with friends and partners in the video, which shows them on a snowy vacation. They do not shy away from the fact the theme of the Konstantin Cherepkov directed clip takes inspiration from “Last Christmas” by Wham!
There are some similarities which can be found between this Sergey new offering and Wham song. However, the track’s fizzing synths and powerful choruses make it particularly dancefloor-friendly. It couldn’t be more different in this regard. Smash!! never appeared on this blog before. After feeling nostalgic. I went back through some of the duo’s releases. And found that most had been sung in English. Sadly, “Noviy god” was not sung in English. I think it would have been delightful if it had been, just for old times’ sake.
From what I have heard this year. I am not so much enamoured with any of the latest festive releases from UK artists. What Sergey and Vlad have done with “Noviy god” is more to my liking. There I said it.
