I’ve been missing New-York-based indie-pop duo Fly by Midnight, a while, same applies with Betty Who, as well for that matter. In a stroke of good fortune, both of these esteemed, pop acts have teamed up for an updated version of the duo’s track “Lovely.” The track which was first released, as a focus-single in lead-up to the duo’s 2019 album “Happy About Everything Else” is a somewhat chilled effort in comparison to Justin and Slavo’s more familiarly electronic, dance-pop weighted tracks. The newest edit featuring Betty Who, believe it or not, is even dreamier still.
Since, making its debut last November, the collaboration has drummed up a lot of hot playlist attention, with streams ascending into the millions. This says something pretty, great about the discerning pop audiences, listening habits. That a softer, quieter moment of the reflection has been scooped up and supported in such an appreciative way, wouldn’t you agree? The addition of Betty Who does bring even lovelier touches to the track. Expanding the dynamic of the song, allows two sides of the story to be told, and not from only the one perspective. Are they speaking about love or mutual affection? In this instance, the later is feeling like the most plausible scenario. This being said, there is an unmistakable sense of will they, won’t they declare their sweet feelings for one another swaying back and forth. So cute.
Although the track has been out on digital outlets, picking up impressive streaming stats for a while. It is only now that the release has been given its own spruced up music video treatment, a clip featuring Justin, Slavo and Betty Who of course. The Matthew Ligotti & Fly by Midnight directed video follows the three friends out for an evening stroll, through the Elysian Park district of Los Angeles. They appear happy and carefree, living in the moment and enjoying each others company as they walk off into the sunset.
Did they need to do any more than this in the video…well, no. The shared glances and interactions between these friends are all that is required to translate the feelings stemming from the lyrics, into the supporting visual.
