I’ll tell you why I like La Roux. A) Because she has never moved away from working with synthesizers and, B) Regardless of the obstacles/life dramas/voice issues she’s encountered on the way, she’s stuck with music because it is her passion. While her 2014 album “Trouble In Paradise” by title alone, implied there was a less than smiley presence behind the happy facade. Ellie Jackson puts all this behind her she returns with “International Woman of Leisure” the lead single from her upcoming third album “Supervision.”
The new single received its first play last night. The Hottest Record In The World, with Annie Mac on Radio One. During her conversation with the DJ., Elly Jackson revealed she had spent three years writing what was going to be her new album, but put it in the bin, after realising she much preferred, a batch of newer voice notes she had recorded on the side. She started writing again in February last year. While four months later was recording at producer Dan Carey’s studio in South London. On the album, she wrote and performed almost every single part, excepting the bass and some of the drums. (Checkout the full interview HERE)
Stylistically the album’s lead track “International Woman Of Leisure” feels quintessentially La Roux. Her instantly recognisable falsetto voice is glowing brightly. With a few electronic-elements in evidence, the melody of the track noticeably links back to the rhythmic patterns which were used throughout her self-titled debut album. The grooving bass is seriously disco, funky. Very fun. I am so glad the Nova Dando directed video for the song is bright, eye-catching and quirky. The clip shows the singer in an office setting, seated at the helm of the I.W.O.L. Her role is to spread joy throughout the world, encouraging everyone (not just women) to take a step back from their stresses and remember to have some fun.
The album “Supervision” will be released on La Roux’s label, Supercolour Records, and is available to pre-order now HERE digitally, on CD, cassette, and LP
