At last, Nic Billington has released “Homesick,” his new single. Nic’s performance at our recent EQ Music Live event introduced me to the track a while ago, but I’d vowed to keep it a secret. ‘Homesick‘ is a continuation of a run of new music from the South African-born, London-based artist. The track follows up the releases of “You Get Me High,” and “Without A Warning” in 2020 and 2021, respectively.
Is it necessary to explain what “Homesick” is about to you?… probably not being that the song title alone, pretty much does the job of spelling it out. The track penned by Nic, Paul Gala and Mia van Wyk, hones in wistfully, delivering a compelling message of reminiscence that fills you with joy and sorrow combined.
Nevertheless, what does “Homesick” mean to Nic Billington?
“When I listened to the demo for the first time, I broke down and cried. I was really struggling with the passing of someone very close to me and this project just felt like the perfect celebration of life and remembrance,” he shares.
I certainly feel both a sense of joy and sorrow present in this track. The verses are crafted with a dark, edgy soundscape whereas, the chorus is ebullient and neon-lit. I am, loving this musical juxtaposition between dark and light melodies teamed with joyous and melancholy lyrics.
When Nic services a new music video, I have high expectations. (Just because I know how much effort he puts into creating a great video). The visual released for “Homesick” is stunning. Nic certainly outdid himself with this clip. The footage brilliantly fuses the spontaneity of living in the moment with moments of also being caught up in deep reflection.
If with “Homesick” this is the first time you are discovering Nic Billington why is this? I have been writing about him on this blog for years! While “Homesick” is as good as any place to kick-start a new obsession with Nic’s amazing electronic-pop tracks. I suggest you go to Spotify and check out his complete discography.
