I thought I had died, and gone to pop heaven when Charli XCX and Lizzo recently released “Blame It On Your Love“. I foolishly believed nothing other than that track could make me more excited for the arrival of “Charli“, the singer’s forthcoming album. I know I wasn’t in any way prepared for how good the Christine and the Queens featured track “Gone” would be. (Even though, I purposefully tried to give online comments and teasers about the track, the side-eye.) The single received its first play. Dubbed as ‘Hottest Record In The World’, with Annie Mac. A feeling immediately, reiterated by the internet.
After going through a phase of music exploration, which saw the singer indulge in the “Number 1 Angel“, and “Pop 2” mixtape releases. Charli XCX is back, giving us fully-fledged, pop songs again, and this is more than OK by me. I am really happy to hear “Gone” is giving us more lyrical depth and doesn’t cover another angle around boys, love etc. It is a bold choice to hear her speak candidly about feelings of anxiety and show a little vulnerability on this track. Inviting, Christine and the Queens on board has created the girl power duo I never knew I needed, yet am unexpectedly loving. Fierce pop queens. In tune with their feelings. So good.
Happy to report there is an overspill of fierceness which has made its way over to the supporting music video. Featuring, bondage, cars, fire and rain, not necessarily in that order. It is epic stuff. It is also pretty intense. It will stir up all sorts of feelings. At the very least, where we develop a girl crush about these two. Hot. Hot. Hot.
