Since being introduced to Jack Newsome recently, I haven’t looked back. As far as new music obsessions go, I found a new one and that’s that. I have had Jack’s tracks I have written about “The Year The World Stood Still“, “Arms” and “Friends” on repeat and I am not one bit tired of them. Quite the contrary in, fact, they are doing the best job of keeping me feeling uplifted. Aside from the great music, Jack’s music video output is pretty stellar as well, and I very much enjoyed playing catch-up. Being that the video for the current track “Friends” has just been unleashed. You would be right to assume my attention is now drawn to it, like bees round a honeypot.
I do love a music video that establishes a good storyline. It seems to me that this is exactly the creative avenue, New Jersey raised, Jack, is endeavouring to pursue. With a background in theatre and dance. This direction seems to be the most natural. He appears to be having an absolute ball with putting these visuals together. It is very nice to see that a light-hearted and entertaining style is starting to shine through.
The music video for “Friends” goes beyond the obvious storyboard ideas we might expect to see being explored. Far from detailing a situation where friends hang out together. The heart of the action sees the singer replicate scenes that appear lifted out of the TV mockumentary series “The Office.” (The adapted American version not the original British, Ricky Gervais / Stephen Merchant version, with Jack being American, and all.) He likens the character he portrays, as, that of, Salesman Dwight. A character with good intentions albeit slightly awkward and buffoon like. The vibes that are picked up here are of an outsider who longs to fit in. But also of a daydreamer with a vivid imagination. This video is really fun to watch, I know I’ll be watching it over and over again for some time to come.
