Abbreviated song titles using initial letters are a pet peeve of mine. These do irritate me to no end. In general, I don’t mind acronyms since I’m not bothered by their use as much. Of course, I will still check out the tracks I receive with abbreviated song titles. In the instance of the latest song released by Cody Frost, “DWYSSWM” (“Don’t Worry Your Secret’s Safe With Me“), it is just as well that I did take note of it. Otherwise, I would have missed out on an exceptionally cool electro-pop offering had I not done this.

This, however, is not the only time Cody Frost’s music has blown me away. The singer-songwriter’s 2021 single “Stomaches” made me notice her as one to watch. For the release of “DWYSSWM“, Cody takes a break from her signature dark-pop stylings (at least for this track). Working alongside Dan Weller and Geoff Swan, she carves out her brightest and most pop-focused sound so far. In so much that you can probably dance to this one.

I have noticed her songwriting comes from a very personal place. In her lyrics, she often takes us through these emotions along with her. Her latest offering, although more upbeat and poptastic, is no exception.

DWYSSWM is about taking back control of your body. This song was a form of therapy for me”. Cody reveals in a press statement. “I felt angry about the situations that myself and my peers have experienced with men. The title is about the secrets we share amongst each other because the topic is so taboo.”

When Cody has got something on her mind that she wants to address, she certainly does not skirt around the issue. She opens up and comes straight out with it when songwriting.

As these lyrics for “DWYSSWM” indicate…

“This isn’t a joke no more. And maybe we can take it slower. I see that I do not get to choose, Did I?” – “How many times do I have to say no? How long before you pick your shit up and go?”

I cannot help but admire how in her tracks Cody cuts to the chase and exerts her independence. I feel it, is a form of next-level self-care. Whereby I am sat in my chair feeling incredibly empowered by what she has to say.

Cody Frost doesn’t do things typically in half measures. Therefore the music video is exciting to watch and far more gripping than almost every other dance choreographed music video put out in the last twelve months. Another important message Cody drives home here is, we should be less afraid and practise being more “you do you”.
