You know, it is my pleasure to write about emerging music talents the most on this music blog. But among the new releases this week, I couldn’t help but be drawn to the latest track and accompanying music video from The Weeknd. I chose to write about him because it feels such a long time since I shared a blockbuster-style music video here on the blog. And similarly, since these style of visuals are somewhat a speciality of The Weeknd. Along with stirring pop melodies infused with electronic touches wrapped around his smooth soulful voice.
The new release from The Weeknd, the track “Dancing in the Flames,” acts as the first glimpse from his forthcoming album, “Hurry Up Tomorrow“. It is also a release that couldn’t be more cinematic in style, if it tried. From the music that has a widescreen pop quality to the music video directed by Anton Tammi, the production screams Hollywood movie aesthetic. However, all the promotional elements of this release are captured in a link up promotion on the new iPhone 16 Pro. Director of Photography, Erik Henrikkson for the music video and Eddy Chen for the promotional photography.
In the aforementioned clip, we see The Weeknd travelling home in his red convertible. However, this turns out to be anything but a straightforward journey home. A dangerous situation is moments away. Maybe he is blinded by some bright incoming lights? Since, in a split second, he elevates into the air from the car he is driving. Similarly he comes crashing to the ground. While there is no graphic depiction of an accident or crash. Moreover, the additional element of shattered glass raining down over a somersaulting The Weeknd, implies this is the case.
However, when seen walking away towards a light beam. Overall the sense evoked is of someone entering another dimension. In this instance a nearby ambulance shows up. Perhaps therefore the song title “Dancing In the Flames” acts as a metaphor for taking risks in love or a sense of renewal.
“I look in the mirror and feel both old and new, stuck in limbo and unable to move. I still haven’t faced myself,” the singer wrote in an Instagram post similarly, sharing the album title.
As our first tease of album No 3, all will become clear, soon enough. In the meantime lets just enjoy the euphoric, danceable vibes the soundtrack gives off.
