I felt last week was once again slow in terms of good engaging music videos. This was my feeling until I noticed the New Zealand-born rising singer-songwriter and producer ETHAN unleashed an intimately endearing visual for his brand new track “Collide.” Yet since making waves with his debut EP “Divine Intervention” in March 2024. It is somewhat astounding he is back so soon with a new release separate from the first body of work.

The music styling Ethan works in covers a lot of R’n’B ground. With that said however, “Collide” exudes something more of a pop sensibility in comparison with other Ethan track releases. Similarly, this is not a new music direction for the artist. He’s merely exploring more of a pop sheen in this new musical outing. Although, I wonder if this inspiration stems from Ethan becoming a little influenced by Troye Sivan‘s 2020 experiments with sonic R’n’B and pop in the “In A Dream” EP. And since Troye Sivan selected Ethan to be a part of APRA‘s Songhub’s Pride. Either way with “Collide” it is noticeable Ethan is building on the sound introduced through the work of his debut EP.

The emotional journey portrayed in the “Divine Intervention” EP extends to the latest track. He delves into the complexities of bringing back love after a painful heartbreak. The song eloquently delves into the protagonist’s struggle to find hope and love again, despite feeling emotionally disconnected.

In the “Collide” music video directed by Courtney Nathan Phillip, viewers are immersed in the tender and intimate moments that define the early stages of a relationship. The emotive display of togetherness skillfully portrays the raw emotions and vulnerability experienced during this pivotal time. Thus creating a truly captivating and persuasive mood.

Undoubtedly, Ethan is an emerging pop sensation who embodies the spirit of the current era. A multifaceted artist excelling as a vocalist, lyricist, and instrumentalist, creating poignant pop compositions that delve into the intricacies of human emotion. Furthermore effectively capturing sentiments that are widely relatable but often difficult to articulate.
