OMG! What is making me write about Jaden (Smith) today? I am not going to lie about knowing more about the youngster than being the son of the original “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” actor Will Smith and “The Matrix” actress mother Jada Pinkett-Smith. That he started out, following in the families acting tradition but since transitioned into rapping. As I don’t have my eyeballs on the rap-scene at all, I’ve pretty much been blissfully unaware of Jaden’s swaggering hip-hop-infused music. Since linking up with BURNS, one of the producers on “Chromatica” by Lady Gaga. Smith’s signature brand has seen a transformation. Revealed through the release of his dreamily chill track “Cabin Fever.”
The latest offering really is a song of our time. A kaleidoscope vibed account of the strange new way of dating in COVID times. The pandemic has changed a lot about our social lives and relationships. With distance as a barrier, hanging out with our families and friends is tough, enough, and made intimate relationships even tougher to establish. The track is full of yearning and a strong desire for some companionship.
In a press statement, Jaden refers to it as “my vision of a quarantine love song” adding, “It’s made to be listened to when the sun is setting, and you’re feeling good.”
I won’t argue that the groove is transcendentally dreamy. A trait which similarly bleeds through BURNS previous production work with Ellie Goulding and Louis Tomlinson. Making a cross-over into pop, couldn’t happen more seamlessly for Jaden than to find a collaborative partner in Matthew BURNS. The fit is like a glove. A fever dream of a team-up.
Smith’s self-directed video for the clip is brimming with kaleidoscope colours, social distancing references, and features the singer driving the funkiest set of wheels on the Hollyweird hills. Which because of its psychedelic paint job is weirdly giving me Scooby-Doo – Mystery Machine feels. Now, that’s what I call double Jinkies! Scoob.
Now that’s what I call electronic pop!
