Caught up in the euphoria of the recent 220 Kid track “Too Many Nights.” I dared to stick my neck out declaring, track collaborator Irish singer-songwriter JC Stewart would likeliest turn up with nominations on tastemakers polls for this year. I predicted a BBC Sound of 2021 mention for JC Stewart, yet it is the MTV Push series which is hailing JC Stewart as an artist-on-the-rise, he’s currently, spotlight artist of the month for January.
I’ll admit I hadn’t taken a close hard look at JC Stewart before he teamed up with 220 Kid. I had heard a few clips by the singer but decided the vibe he was going with at the time wasn’t pop-enough to feature here on the blog. After signing with Warner Records, going down the pop route is the direction they are taking JC forward with. And why not, he’s young, cool and honed skills in songwriting and sings like he’s been a high-grossing pop star for many years already. He’s a co-writer on Lewis Capaldi track “Hollywood” from the singers hugely successful album “Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent.” And fellow Irish singer-songwriter Niall Horan of One Direction has helped write JC’s new track “Break My Heart.” i.e. he’s getting good, tutelage from those in the know about what makes pop, hot and crucially what makes the listeners tune in.
One trend JC isn’t ready to grow out of just, yet, is writing sad bops (the clue being in the title “Break My Heart“). If he’s going to throw in a bouncy sing-a-long chorus, he’s pretty much always going to be headed for a win of some sorts. Young ladies will appreciate the moody, smoulder looks found in his music videos. It will make teenagers go weak at the knees. There are lots to like about the intimate pop stirrings from JC Stewart, and he sings well. The future’s looking bright.
Now that’s what I call electronic pop!
