It was not my plan to be late to the party on yet another The Knocks single release. (But nonetheless, I am all the same). At least I am early on one thing. The release of “HISTORY“. The duo’s third album. (It comes out on Friday 29th, April). The latest track from Ben “B-Roc” Ruttner and James “JPatt” Patterson “Bang Bang” features the impressive, blissed-out voice of American singer-songwriter Donna Missal. Although, I missed the email about this one buried in the mountains of submissions that piled up while I was away. The electro, funk-pop groover caught my attention over the past two weekends as I caught up on everything.
Completely, the track has a noticeable hypnotic groove to it that immediately leapt out. Picking out lots of referencing in the way of musical motifs leads me to conclude the duo have studied pop, disco and funk well. There is no doubt The Knocks were always going to pull me in with “Bang Bang“. To their credit. They made me write about Donna Missal for the first time, also. On this track, Donna’s vocals smack a likeness similar to that of “Undrunk” songstress FLETCHER
The teaming of seductive beats with breathy vocal, springs to mind the track “I Feel Love” by Donna Summer, in parts. That when combined create, a potent elixir with the effect of a musical aphrodisiac. The kind of piping hot electro funkiness, proof positive you will want to get your freak on with.
The video alludes to hedonism. A dance floor heaving with gyrating hips and glistening bodies. The vibe. Sweat and pheromones.
My excitement levels are at their peak.
“HISTORY” arrives everywhere on Friday, April 29. Includes guest features from – MUNA, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and Foster The People. Cold War Kids, Parson James, Dragonette and Cannons. Mallrat, Donna Missal, YOKE LORE and POWERS.
