I didn’t get a chance to write about the sensational new Harry Styles track “As it Was” when it came out the other week. As readers probably know. In general, I am mostly onto a new Harry Styles release as soon as it hits the interweb. (It was my need to escape on vacation that pipped Harry to the post this time. Gasp!) Know this. As the song was a synth-pop song, the frustration was real to me.
On my return back home, I fully expected to find “As it Was” topping the UK Official To 40 single chart. The track has now enjoyed a glorious 2 weeks run as the #1 song in the UK. I don’t see any reason why it can’t secure this position for a third consecutive week when singles chart results are released later today.
By now, everyone should have picked out the musical referencing in this song of the a-ha track “Take on Me“. (The kick-drum beat & hinted at bits in the twinkling synth parts). Taiwan film-maker/music producer AnDy Wu was quick to notice the similarities between the tracks, as his mashup shared on YouTube demonstrates.
Harry gave his first live performance of “As it Was” at his headline slot at Coachella last weekend. (I made sure I tuned in). During his set, Harry also debuted two new tracks – one called “Boyfriends“. The atmosphere being at its most electric in the Colorado Desert in Indio, California. Harry turned up the heat even further with his exhilarating performance of his latest single. The shrieks of delight from the Coachella crowd say all that needs to be said. If, in fact, there had been a house to be brought down. You can bet we would have seen Harry energetically leaping atop a mountain of rubble. In this performance, he gave everything he had. The exchange of energy between the crowd and Harry was palpable in the extreme.
