Quite frankly, “An Open Heart” is one of Bright Light Bright Light’s best productions he’s ever done. The pairing of songwriting legend Ian Masterson on this track was a very smart and clever strategy that clearly resonates deeply into the fan psyche of all us hardcore Rod Thomas fans.

I truly love the minimalism of this music video too. When I first watched it, the empty London (but very New York City looking) apartment clearly resembled an empty heart to me with the prolific Rod serving as the voice of wisdom. Maybe that’s not what the video is supposed to be about at all, but my quick interpretation of this complex simplicity has truly struck a chord upon first viewing.

“An Open Heart” also shows musical growth for Rod and this excerpt from the press release issued today says it all…

“An all-out electronic pop song, ‘An Open Heart’ looks at perception, and how easy it is to miss the beauty of a moment. Whereas the debut record looked at what a place or a person can tease out in you, these new songs look at how you see your surroundings – what it is you see and what it is you miss.”

I’ve never been a stop and smell the roses kinda guy, but sometimes we all need to be reminded as of such and open our hearts to the beauty that life has presented to us – it’s really not all that doom and gloom here in the first world although we seem to never really the important things we are missing out on sometimes…
