I made sure I was reasonably awake. While tuning in to the Zoe Ball premier of the new Kylie Minogue and Years & Years track “A Second To Midnight” on her Radio 2 breakfast show. My curiosity to hear the song definitely heightened since Kylie joined Olly (Years & Years) on a version of his recent single “Starstruck“. Although I wasn’t initially slain at my first listen. The track, striking me as being a touch outdated. I continued to stick around for the video premiere anyways, as maybe I would be hit by some special magic there instead.
By this time, I was fuelled up on a nutritious bowl of Museli. Alleviating pangs of hunger and a morning coffee, top-up, seemed to do the trick. The video was directed by Sophie Muller, who we know as a director with an eye for detail (MARINA, Dido, Sophie Ellis-Bextor). But this time, it seemed she had something altogether different in store for us, quirkiness with a dash of humour. As I sat watching, thinking the dance routine and choreography was nice. I suddenly became aware of some playful extraness going on and in the form of dressing up as each other, as though face-swapping. Usually, when using such trickery. The end results come out freakish and odd but not when it’s the beautiful faces of Kylie and Olly. When face-swapped, they just look strangely cute. Safe to say, becoming mesmerised by the video. In turn, lead to more of an appreciation for the track itself.
“A Second To Midnight” confirms the release of a new updated version of Kylie’s 2020 album “DISCO“. “DISCO: Guest List Edition“, out November 12th, includes ace new remixes, and two more brand new tracks with Disco legend Gloria Gaynor and pop sensation Jessie Ware.
