Opening the year with renewed creative energy, “2SIDED” arrives as the first taste of “Ambiguous Desire”, the forthcoming third album from Arlo Parks, due April 3 via Transgressive. For the 2021 Mercury Prize winner, the single signals both a reset and a bold step forward, ushering in a new era shaped by movement, release, and joy rather than retreat.
After a two-year break from the spotlight, Parks sounds revitalised. Crucially, “2SIDED” leans into electronic, dance-driven pop, a noticeable departure from the hushed indie-soul intimacy that defined her earlier releases. However, the emotional core remains unmistakably Arlo. This evolution is driven by time spent clubbing, although, not necessarily as escapism, but as exploration. Venues such as Midnight Lovers in Los Angeles, alongside London favourites K Bridge and Venue MOT, became spaces of freedom and inspiration.
“These were places where I could be whoever I wanted to be on that night,” Parks explains. Whether lingering on the edges or losing herself completely on the dancefloor, the experience proved transformative. Importantly, that sense of playful reinvention bleeds directly into the music, lending “2SIDED” its glowing sense of release.
Lyrically, the single explores yearning and tension, capturing the charged moment when desire tips into action. As when feelings can no longer remain internal. As a result, the track balances vulnerability with propulsion, pairing introspective lyrics with club-ready beats.
The accompanying music video, directed by Molly Burdett, visually reinforces this shift. Set within a heaving dancefloor, Parks is among clubbers gently shedding their inhibitions, mirroring the track’s emotional and physical momentum. Meanwhile, production from Baird (Brockhampton, Kevin Abstract) adds a sleek, euphoric polish, framing Parks’ poetic delivery in soft-focus dance-pop.
Ultimately, “2SIDED” feels like an artist reconnecting with pleasure without abandoning depth. It suggests that “Ambiguous Desire” may be Arlo Parks’ most expansive record yet. A project embracing movement, intimacy, and self-expression in equal measure.
