There are few independent UK pop artists who have earned the trust of their audience quite like Tom Aspaul. Every album has marked a distinct chapter in his evolution, and with “Moustache (Part 1),” he opens what feels like his most ambitious era to date. Seemingly inspired by the release strategy behind Robyn‘s iconic “Body Talk” trilogy, Tom is rolling out his own three-part “Moustache” journey across 2026 and 2027. It’s an exciting concept, but additionally, the music proves this is much more than a clever release plan.
As the fourth album in his catalogue, “Moustache (Part 1)” immediately strikes as his most assured and sophisticated work yet. While albums “Black Country Disco”, “Life In Plastic” and “Cabin Fever” each carved out their own distinctive identities. The new “Moustache” collection feels more confident and noticeably elevated. Much of that is owed to the immaculate production from Gil Lewis. Gil’s shimmering dance-pop textures allow every melody to breathe while giving Tom’s songwriting an irresistible glow.
The album opens with “You Can Try Me,” a blissfully warm slice of disco-pop that instantly transports you into its sunlit world. Beneath the sparkling production lies a story driven by longing, desire and emotional vulnerability. These are feelings that continue to weave their way throughout the record. Across these songs, Tom reflects on identity, sexuality, intimacy and self-expression with refreshing honesty, making “Moustache” (Part 1) feel deeply personal despite its carefree exterior.
The seductive “Black Leather” embraces an unapologetically homoerotic energy. Whereas “Drown In The Daylight” emerges as one of the album’s undeniable highlights. Fans of Years & Years and Olly Alexander will instantly recognise familiar sonic territory alignment in these tracks. Particularly so in the soaring vocal phrasing and euphoric electronic production, yet Tom never slips into imitation. Instead, he confidently stamps his own identity across every chorus.
In his own words: “During a trip to Southern Italy in September, I compiled a playlist of sunny, summery, Italo Disco bops to help make the long car journeys through the beautiful countryside go faster. I came home totally inspired to make carefree, sexy music, with no agenda, no overly conceptual ideas. But when I look back at the songs now, I realise many of them are about wanting something that’s just out of reach. I’ve loved every minute of creating MOUSTACHE, flexing my muscles as a producer, as well as working with talented new collaborators.”
Perhaps the most exciting aspect of “Moustache (Part 1)” is witnessing Tom fully embrace a new creative confidence. While his playful, camp sensibilities have always been a beloved part of his artistry, this chapter sees him step beyond expectation. Rather than simply refining his established formula, Tom has reinvented it. He delivers a sophisticated dance-pop record that feels ready to stand proudly alongside the work of his contemporary peers.
