Well, somebody has clearly forgotten to tell Sophie Grey. that summer is supposed to be about taking it easy! This year, our favourite retro-electro pop darling has jetted across the cosmos, made transatlantic crossings and generally kept herself rather busy with guest spots, festival appearances and, thankfully for us, plenty of new music.
Fresh from a summer of pop adventures, Sophie has unleashed her latest synth-pop confection, “Air,” arriving just in time for her appearance at Manchester Village Pride last weekend. And honestly, I think this one has been worth catching our breath for.
Sophie is becoming increasingly in demand, and quite rightly so. She has also been quietly amassing an enviable catalogue of self-penned and self-produced retro-electro ditties. Just this year, we’ve already had “The Voice In Your Head” and “Lunar Highs,” and now “Air” swoops in with another deliciously synth-soaked slice of pop.
Now, before you start thinking this is Sophie’s environmental era, let me stop you right there. “Air” isn’t about climate change or desperately searching for the nearest oxygen mask! Instead, Sophie captures that intoxicating, breathless feeling that arrives when a certain someone occupies far too much space in your head. Particularly so when that crush happens to be standing nearby.

I’m running out of air.
You make my heartache, neon glow
I’m running out of air”
Yep. We’ve all been there, haven’t we?
Love, lust, longing and the wonderfully complicated business of having feelings for somebody remain familiar territory for Sophie. But what I particularly love is how she wraps those emotions in her own stylish retro-electro universe. It’s glossy, neon-lit and irresistibly pop, while still retaining that little emotional tug underneath.
And naturally, Sophie wouldn’t simply give us a new song without giving us something fabulous to look at, too. The music video for “Air” continues her rather enviable tradition of fashion-forward styling and expressive choreography, adding another visual layer to this latest pop offering.
Our Sophie Grey. appreciation at EQ Music extends well beyond these pages. We’ve had the pleasure of hosting Sophie at our EQ Music Live events, and now she’s also featured in the latest edition of our newly launched EQ Music Zine (Issue 03).
So yes, we’re continuing to champion Sophie Grey. Namely, because when an artist keeps delivering stylish, self-produced pop with personality, why on earth would we stop?
