There is something wonderfully unpredictable about Remi Wolf. Whenever this pop innovator returns with new music, I know I can expect colour, character and a visual world that is anything but ordinary. Now, with her third studio album “MUD” arriving October 9 via Island Records, Remi invites us into something a little more personal.
After breaking her two-year musical silence with “Twiggy” in July, she returns as August draws to a close with “Bottle”. And this time, the humour and eccentricity come with a much more vulnerable edge.
Remi has described “MUD” as a transformative experience, explaining, “I feel like I’ve crossed into a new phase of life because of this album. I literally felt like I was covered in shit. And now, at the end of the album process, I feel so clean and clear. It has been a very cleansing record to make for me.”
That feeling of emotional cleansing seems to run right through the new material. “Twiggy” initially plays with Remi’s fascination with emotionally unavailable people, delivered with the kind of cheeky honesty we have come to expect from her. But beneath the humour, there is a suggestion of something more complicated.
With “Bottle”, Remi heads straight into that complexity.
The track opens a candid conversation around sobriety, temptation and addiction. Remi seemingly caught between wanting to escape the bottle and being pulled back towards it. There is no attempt to sugarcoat the struggle as she sings,
“I’m off and on and off again On and off and on again I can’t get the bottle if I don’t get up I can’t get the bottle if I don’t get up”.
The accompanying video, directed by Remi Wolf and Milo Nichols, turns those emotions into an equally striking visual experience. Taking her larger-than-life presence to the beach and eventually plunging into the depths of a swimming pool to retrieve a glass bottle, Remi transforms the song’s internal battle into a surreal, physical journey.
And perhaps that is what makes “MUD” so intriguing. Beneath the bold colours, playful visuals and deliciously unconventional pop, Remi Wolf appears ready to get seriously honest. If “Bottle” is anything to go by, “MUD” could be her most revealing chapter yet — proof that sometimes the road to feeling clean and clear involves diving right into the deep end first.
