Hey EQ Readers!
Happy Year of the Ox.
I just came across this new track from Christina Aguilera and it appears that she is furthering her foray into electro. “Falling in Love Again” is a contribution she made to the soundtack of Frank Miller’s (Sin City) latest film “The Spirit” which stars Scarlett Johansson and Eva Mendes. The track was originally performed by Marlene Dietrich in the ’30s and Christina gives it a spin futuristique.
Although I enjoyed the electo re-workings of her earlier hits “Genie in a Bottle” and “Beautiful” featured on her recent “Keeps Gettin’ Better (A Decade of Hits)“, I can’t say that I’m too keen on her performance here as she never quite finds the right stride; she plods along. I mean, I applaud Christina for pushing her artistic boundaries, but something in me can’t help but feel that she appears to be hitting a creative plateau of sorts. I don’t know if it’s just me or not, but when I think Christina Aguilera, I think big vocals and sassy antics, not subdued melancholy. Why alter a winning formula this dramatically?
If this is the future sound of Christina, I can’t say with confidence that I’ll be racing to HMV come summer 2009, when her next album is slated for release. Hopefully Christina will strike the right balance between artistic integrity and proper use of her gorgeous instrument in the studio.
What are your thoughts, EQ readers?
