Readers, I am aware that much of the new music covered on this blog lately has leaned quite heavily in a pop direction. The most likely reason for this is that we got a festival season back up and running again this year. All things considered, since we are only in the first week of September and the festival season is just coming to a close. I do not want to tempt fate, but I am also pleased to report I have seen some electronic-pop submissions return this week. Among the mail, I found “When the Lights Go,” the latest track by Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs (an established artist who I have never written about before).
It is a failing on my part that I have never stopped to listen in on the music of Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs (aka British producer Orlando Higginbottom). Except for the odd remix here and there. That he has worked for other artists.
The song, I am focusing on today, “When the Lights Go,” is the title track of his sophomore album. Out today 9th September, released on his own imprint, Nice Age. The song, a lovely, buzzy synth-laden offering, is equal parts dancefloor worthy, delivered with a twist of dream pop melody.
On the album “When The Lights Go,” this is where TEED pulls listeners into a deeply personal journey. Bringing in a pop aesthetic full of depth, feeling, storytelling and woe. Throughout the title track, he talks especially fondly about a loved one. Using intimate lyrics, he makes no effort to hide his intentions with this song. A sweet, romantic gesture on his part.
“Baby, when the lights go, I wanna be yours. Hold me tight, don’t let go. Come on, won’t you let me please you. Before it all falls down. Precious time. Spin me around.”
What I love here, is the soft, mellow sound. The song is solid gold. An evergreen classic only just heard. “When the Lights Go” sounds like simmering synth-pop perfection to my ears. Equally important, the song also helps me realize that I need to catch up with the rest of the Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs music. Since there is a lot listening to get done, I think it best that I start with the new album and work my way back to the beginning, on this one.
