Because the sunshine decided to make an appearance this weekend, I found myself hankering for soft, sunny sounds to enhance the mood further. The search for a soothing melodic pop song didn’t take long. American singer-songwriter Nic Howell, soon had me in my feels by way of his latest release “Tacos & Captain.” I feel ready to spend more time outside, (even if permitted, only to enjoying my back garden) since the cold winter snap has subsided. The warm and dreamy soundscape delivered on “Tacos & Captain” plays to this vibe. Easy listening pop, with a sprinkling of synths for added good measure.
The track speaks about going on a road trip with your significant other. A drive, so long that you have the time while on your travels, to reminisce about old times you’ve shared. From watching Californian sunsets together to rattling through childhood memories. You are at ease and comfortable in one another’s company. A serving of “Tacos & Captain” is the food of love if you’re Nic Howell. Being truthful I’m not so sure, a plateful of Mexican food would work me in quite the same way. The crux of the song is really about spending quality time together.

“Tacos & Captain” is actually a love note I wrote to my significant other. I wrote it about all of the good times we’ve shared. The writing process started at a beach house in St. Augustine and I was happy in my feels, so we whipped out the guitar and went for it.”
I can’t help but notice how the nostalgic sound of the track sounds somewhat familiar. The press informs me, Alan Thomas, from the Arkansas pop duo joan helped with the writing and production on the track. Makes sense being that intoxicating, dreamy synth-pop is the signature aesthetic used by joan. “Tacos & Captain” is the perfect pop track to usher in a seasonal change, of warmer more spring awoken weather. It will be a key track on my playlist, for sunnier days ahead.
