If you’ve been hanging around here on EQ long enough, you’ll know I absolutely love it when an artist slips into one of those creative hot streaks where the releases keep coming. (Example – Nieri) That’s exactly what’s happening right now with Tsatsamis, and honestly, I’m not mad about it one bit.
In fact, I feel it’s about to become one of those delicious playlist moments where Tsatsamis pops up back-to-back. Each new reveal from the emerging “Tsycophant” era is landing with a firm grip on the senses, and once the song is in your ears, it doesn’t exactly let go. The pull is especially strong and frankly, I’m happily surrendering to it.
What’s particularly exciting is hearing the shift in sonic gears. The latest drops, “Recreational” and its new companion track “Spit or Kiss,” show Tsatsamis stretching creatively and leaning into a slightly different flavour of pop expression. “Recreational” radiates 80s vibes, while “Spit or Kiss” arrives with a sleek emotional punch that feels instantly classic yet refreshingly current.
Speaking about the song, Tsatsamis explains it’s “about losing your dignity over fighting for someone’s approval/affection. Then leaning into it to be honest.” Oof. That one lands, doesn’t it? It taps right into that painfully relatable moment where pride takes a backseat to the hope that someone — anyone— might return the feeling.
Above all, musically, the references jump out pretty quickly. “Spit or Kiss” is unmistakably George Michael coded. There’s that smooth, sensual pop groove and soulful phrasing that immediately brings to mind the effortless cool of George at his most magnetic. But this isn’t imitation — it’s more like a loving nod, filtered through Tsatsamis’ own modern pop sensibility.
What’s exciting about this run of releases is the growing confidence behind it. Tsatsamisseems completely in his creative zone right now, blending emotional honesty with sleek, engaging pop. As the “Tsycophant” era unfolds, each new track adds another layer to the story.
