Neither pop pairing Icona Pop nor wacky electronic duo SOFI TUKKER has charmed me in a while. However, learning about them joining forces in the studio, on the track “Spa,” lead to me being, somewhat curious about the collaboration. I sure wasn’t expecting anything subtle to come out of their venture. My first thought was, these acts, together have the possibility of pushing bonkers to the limit. But would they go there, and if they did would I be into it?
Both acts have collared sync deals with their incendiary pop releases (Icona Pop with “I Love It“, Sofi Tukker with “Batshit“). Will their joint-effort prove as lucrative? Well, possibly, because “Spa” is the kind of sparky driven banger which works well in TV advertisements, that cool on-trend brands are eager to link with. A track peppered with hooks, a dose of uniqueness and that is instantly recognisable. “Spa” has it all.
With COVID-19 still around, dance music doesn’t seem to fit in, right with the current, on-going restrictions around socialising. Fair play to Icona Pop and Sofi Tukker who have turned on the situation its head, and made the most of keeping to their musical lanes, whilst still poking a little fun, as usual. Swapping out ‘club’ references for mentions of pampering sessions at the spa is sharp-witted of them. I can’t begin to imagine they would have written a track about self-care (at least in this form) before all that has happened in 2020. It is a clever-stroke of intuitively by them that “Spa” promotes wellness of the body and mind. As well as being reflective of, how many of us are now filling the void in our leisure time. Whether gifting ourselves treatment at the beauty salon or pampering at home. It is one of the few, enjoyments that we are still allowed to reward ourselves with for the time being. “Spa” resonates with this. And so, Icona Pop and Sofi Tukker found a new way of making dance-pop relevant in the COVID era, they are clever beans aren’t they!
