There is no denying how much of a modern-day trailblazer in the alternative pop music scene Remi Wolf is. Neither that her music fundamentally created from abundant ideas, thoughts and experiences. Whereas in 2021 debut album “Juno,” Remi made a striking impression on the music world, sharing unique concepts and the use of innovative musicality in her first body of work. Releasing the sophomore album “Bad Ideas,” spotlights her musical growth and progressively improved craftsmanship. In a project where she dives into neck-deep sharing experiences spawned from touring “Juno” and generally, growing up. The tracks are a culmination of learning about herself, the people in her life, and her relationships. How she relates to all of those situations.
I won’t hide the fact, that sometimes I have struggled with Remi’s experimenting with vastly diverse music styles. However, I have no such concerns regarding skills, songwriting, performance, vocals etc. In the first instance, I found the expanse of the music styling explored, overwhelming. (Which says more about my personal music taste, than it does Remi’s creative innovation).
Listening to the sophomore album “Bad Ideas,” I have grown more appreciative of her artistry and vibe with a lot of the content this time around. In addition to the “Bad Ideas” album lead-in tracks “Cinderella,” “Toro,” “Alone In Miami” and “Motorcycle“. And when celebrating the album release, the focus shifts to the track “Soup.”
Notably, “Soup” sees Remi embrace 80s synth-pop while in the guise of a power ballad. Where she aims for the stars and ultimately comes into her own. Anyway, the song is rather more complex in its lyricism than opening up a discussion about the warm and nourishing properties of a nice bowl of soup.
Discussing the track, Remi comments,
“Soup” explores my relationship to commitment and follow through. If you ever really wanted to be there for someone fully but ended up getting drunk on a rooftop instead, Soup is for you!“
