Former American Idol season two contestant and BFF to the LGBT community Kimberly Caldwell has been touring all summer, making stops at various Pride festivals all over the country performing brand new tracks following the 2011 release of her debut album, Without Regret, including the insanely catchy, party anthem “On the Weekend“.

The new pop/rock song was written as an ode to those struggling with a 9 to 5 job, desperately awaiting the end of the work week to become the badass they truly are. “On the Weekend” features Caldwell‘s strong, rocker chick vocals as 80s inspiration from artists such as Joan Jett and Rod Stewart come shining through, especially on the unique chorus where the former Idol screams “Cuz I’m sleeping in, Recovering, From dancing on the bar, On the weekend, I’m a f***ing rockstar“.

On the Weekend” shows a slight departure from the moody, break up-inspired music found on her debut. While the new track and others, including “Tied Together“, highlight Caldwell‘s impressive range and itch to return to the studio, they also represent the growth of an artist who’s time on a television competition show was over almost a decade ago. The artist hit it out of the park with this one. Raise your drinks, let’s pray for the weekend!
