It’s hard to believe that it’s already been ten years since Sweden’s Army of Lovers last dazzled us with their unique and unforgettable brand of camp pop. But now, they’re back with a stellar new track, “Love Is Blue,” Army of Lovers featuring Olya Polyakova.
Of course, it’s not really a shock that the hiatus lasted so long, given that Army of Lovers’ mastermind, Alexander Bard, has no less than four prominent music projects. (Including Army of Lovers, BWO (Bodies Without Organs), Vacuum, and Gravitonas.) However, each of these four ventures remained eerily quiet for years as Alexander focused on songwriting, TV appearances, and even the political arena.
However, lately there has been some reminiscing from AOL. An Instagram account, (set up earlier in the year has led to the announcement of new music, hinted at three weeks ago… “Join our “Sexodus“. The album “Sexodus” is slated for release on Friday, November 24th. But here’s the uber exciting part… every Friday leading to the release, commencing from October 6th, a new power track drops. So that amounts to seven tracks at least to get us all pumped up for the album. Moreover, it means I won’t sleep through my alarm on a Friday for the next 7 weeks. Squeek… are you as excited as I am?
The excitement kicks off with “Love Is Blue,” with Ukrainian megastar Olya Polyakova lending her vocals to the song. Best of all, the track sounds precisely how you will remember Army of Lovers. Dance-pop that is sweepingly dramatic, bearing a hint of tragedy while musically paying homage to the iconic ABBA in parts. To top it off nicely “Love Is Blue” is not playing to modern pop tropes, therefore the song is all the more captivating in today’s music scene. Listening to it feels like we’re travelling through a time machine. While the music sure is a fun listen. We do however have the societal messages carried in the lyrics remind us we are living in the year 2023.
