Today my attention turns to alt-pop — and more specifically, the return of a personal favourite: Baby Queen. Somehow, it’s been five years since I last featured her on the blog. Yet, as expected, she returns having continued to experiment, arriving with a refreshingly different direction on a new track, “I Hope You Don’t Remember Me.”

While the sound has shifted, some things remain reassuringly intact — not least her thoughtful, poetic yet conversational approach to songwriting. The track opens with a soft acoustic guitar melody, gently drawing the listener in while building intrigue around where I Hope You Don’t Remember Me might be heading musically. Over this understated introduction, Baby Queen delivers a quietly poignant narrative centred on rejection, vulnerability and emotional self-preservation.

Speaking about the single, Baby Queen explains:

This song is about an urge to revoke my memory from somebody else’s mind after perceived rejection (partly in defiance and partly out of shame) and have them be erased from my own in return.”

As the track unfolds, there’s a moment where listeners may wonder whether this restrained, melodic direction will ever give way to the kind of instantly catchy, sing-along chorus that defined much of Baby Queen’s earlier work. Thankfully, she still has that instinct. A wall of driving synths eventually cuts through, expanding the track into something richer and more expansive while retaining its dreamy, emotionally evocative core.

Ultimately, I Hope You Don’t Remember Me feels less like a reinvention and more like a confident recalibration. Baby Queen isn’t chasing trends or revisiting past formulas; instead, she’s allowing space for nuance, restraint and emotional honesty. Five years on from her last appearance here, this return feels both familiar and quietly braver — the work of an artist increasingly comfortable with who she is, and unafraid to let that evolution unfold naturally.
