Since appearing at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon, Portugal, singer and former professional model Mikolas Josef, is one among a few Eurovision stars to remain on my radar. Namely, after his stint in the competition, he continued recording and releasing a series of catchy pop tracks which eventually culminated in the release of a debut album, “ONE,” earlier this year. Although, with some of these songs, now a few years old Mikolas is seemingly keen to move forward into his sophomore era. Notably, he gives a taste of the musical direction he is taking in a new track called “Diamonds.”
However, even before the release, fans and followers of the artist promptly noticed that the track features a nostalgic nod to ATC’s classic hit “Around The World (La La La La La).” Yet I am more than taken aback at how brazenly sexy the song lyrics are. Furthermore, how no attempt is made to tone down the NSFW narrative, that is sung in English and not Mikolas native Czech. The track is after all a notable departure from the whimsical love songs on the debut album. Where it felt at times he was attempting to branch off in an Ed Sheeran-like music direction.
The “Diamonds” came, shaking all notion of that idea from my mind. Mikolas has come of age. Similarly, his music is now doing the same. Using a slick R’n’B style but infused with pop sensibility. Mikolas has transitioned from an endearing albeit sweet pop crooner. Into that of a moody and masterful singer with beautiful tonality and utmost vocal command. In fact, the shift is somewhat jaw-dropping in its comparison, actually.
Unquestionably, “Diamonds” is the right sound for a rising star in the international pop scene. So if you haven’t got Mikolas on your radar yet, I suggest you do something about that. Namely, follow him on social media pronto.
