What a good time for pop it is! Although considerably better for Canadian pop singer James Alphonse who just unleashed a funky pop track called “Crazy For You.” Although the single shares its name with a certain circa 1985 Madonna track, the latest effort from James is not that or a newer version of that one. The only thing which links these releases is the song titles. In any case, James considers his vibe less synth-pop and favours R&B infused pop flavours instead.

Crazy For You” is a track written around a huge groove. The bassline bumps along nicely, it is noticeable. It is so noticeable that the beats immediately prompted the pitter-patter of my fingers drumming rhythmically, on the dining room table (where I had perched to listen to the track.) I think the jaunty swagger, of this track, has reminded me in some way of the sonic palette Nick Jonas self-titled debut album had. I was the biggest fan of “Jealous.” I am feeling a hit similar to it on “Crazy For You.”

The deep dive on the track is…

“In university, I enjoyed getting to know different people to see if it felt right; I was slow to know. One day, it seemed like the right person came along and I was finally ready to pour myself into a real relationship, but the other person wasn’t there with me.

I recognized then what it may have been like for those who dated me thinking it could’ve gotten more serious when I wasn’t ready, so this song is an apology to them.” James explains.

James Alphonse has in no way amassed a large music output as yet. I am of the feeling he is an artist who is meticulous in making music and getting it right, nonetheless. And it shows. “Crazy For You” has a humungous, memorable hook and gets the thumbs up from me. Is a bop!
