Boy, did someone turn up the heat again? By this, I am not only referring to the sweltering heatwave conditions that I am currently experiencing here in the UK. The undisputed summer pop song of all time. “Club Tropicana,” of 80s pop duo Wham! is enjoying a new lease of life. Wham’s! Andrew Ridgeley with Dru Masters, (composer-songwriter and producer) form Drummar. They take on the 1983 classic giving the iconic summer anthem a synthy overhaul. And where the track now unfathomably sizzles in ways that it did not before.
As seen in the music video to the original track. Those of us who are 40+ years. Are sure to fondly recall seeing George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley swimming poolside while taking a break from their air piloting duties. With backing singers Pepsi and Shirley seen alongside them, indulging in some R&R before resuming their stewardess activities. When we hear the song “Club Tropicana,” these images come to mind.
While we do not wish that these cherished memories of the seminal Wham! track, are diminished in any way. As you might expect of a track of this stature however, it has seen it’s, fair-share of remix action. The latest update of the song from Drummar puts a Kygo-like fresh spin on the 80s original. Here’s the thing! The duo’s debut album “Fantastic,” from which the single “Club Tropicana” comes, is fast approaching a landmark anniversary. Next year i.e, 2023, will mark forty years since the album was first released. With this in mind, my head is immediately exploding with thoughts and ideas. A pivotal moment in the groups career such as this is should be embraced in greater celebration in some way. In my opinion, the singles “Bad Boys” and “Wham Rap!” are every bit career-defining of the duo.
Surely, this red-letter occasion is of utmost importance and will not go unmarked?
