It sure has been a meteoric rise for G Flip the Australian emerging artist has gone from making pop songs in her bedroom to being one of the most buzzed-about new acts at SXSW within a very, short space of time. Her quirky debut track “About You” continues to laud plenty of hits and on the back, it’s success it has Georgia Flipo now taking her music to festivals and such like, further around the world. In fact just this week, the drummer turned singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist is touching down in the UK to showcase her tunes at The Great Escape in Brighton. Sensing those festival goers making their way to the event would likeliest know break out hit “About You” from the support given by Annie Mac at BBC Radio 1, Zane Lowe at Beats 1, Spotify playlists and online blogs. During the last 24 hours, she’s snuck out “Killing My Time” as its follow-up.

The story goes. G Flip spent every day in, 2017 teaching herself how to produce, her songs. Together with working out in the first place how to turn the melodies, she hummed into her phone’s voice memo app into songs. It sounds as though it were a hugely creative time for the aspiring musician but having now heard sophomore release “Killing My Time” I really, think the memo’s had a lot going for them. Namely, exciting ideas and brilliantly catchy melodies. The new song takes up the batten from debut “About You” and proves no let up in the inescapably catchy, stakes. What is also clear, G Flip’s songwriting is a god given gift. To highlight this best I’ve chosen to put up the sweet, lyric video which does the perfect job of getting to the heart of the song and gives a good sense of how organic and unfeigned the narratives are.

“The story behind “Killing My Time” revolves around a girl who kept distracting me from making music,” says G Flip. “It was hard to escape and be productive, so I inevitably ended up breaking up with her because I wanted to focus.” Out of the break-up came another attention-grabbing pop song, so all’s not lost. On the back of two great songs, I’m willing to stick my neck out and say whip-smart G Flip will end up having the upper hand in everything she puts her mind to in the end.

G Flip is a rarity, as a newcomer who’s style in music is catchy as it is smart, her tracks will inhabit your mind in much the same way as an earworm does. She’s no one trick pony, the hype around her is on point and relevant. My sound advice is, get onto her now. And, if you haven’t already, you really should check out the live footage Raj captured at G Flip’s much buzzed about showcase at this year’s SXSW.
