It was not so long ago, we were appraising Will Heard’s wonderfully, hypnotic “I Better Love You” as the standout track from the South London singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist’s debut EP, “Trust“. The release was Will’s first project in his own, right after a series of feature spots on tracks with Tourist, Anne-Marie, Rudimental and Kygo. It was these profile-raising collaborations which helped his first headline shows to sell out super, quick. And, our Raj was lucky to catch-up with the emerging singer for a chat when he appeared at The British Summer Time festival back in July of this year. On the back of the success of these well-received gigs, Will’s going back out on the road in April 2018 for a more extensive UK tour up and down the country. He shared the announcement with the release of a new single, “Fallin’ 4 U“.

Will’s vocals are so, soulful on this track, his use of the upper register is spellbinding and dreamy. It wouldn’t be out of place to say that the song has a fair bit of Prince-like influence going on, within it. It is unquestionably slicker than the average dance banger. Funky, trippy, and danceable. Predominately an electro-soul record that’s slow, silky and smooth with a touch of electronic. An after clubbing closing hours midnight charmer which certainly has more sparkle in its melody than the local Casanova out on the pull has twinkling in his roving eye.

Listening to “Fallin’ 4 U” reminds me, how I wish that Sam Sparro would bring out more music that sounds a lot like this like he used to. Will Heard does seem to be stepping into Sam’s funky shoes on this song, first mesmerising us with his golden voice, the track is one that touches the heart while moving the body. It shows how Will is branching out into new sounds with a growing sense of purpose and control.
